Ethos & Important Information
There are many different types of eating disorders, but to this day it seems Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa remain the two most publicised and recognised of them all. Anorexia nervosa often draws the most attention and is prioritised within the media, where images of emaciated individuals are shared, with the intention to shock and (sometimes) glorify the disease.
I personally know that weight is not the determining factor as to the severity or validity of an eating disorder, which is why Munch and Mend will make no reference to any figures relating to weight or BMI, and there will be no images of myself or anyone other than presenting at a medically ‘healthy’ weight.
I would personally like to emphasize that Munch and Mend recognises ALL eating disorders as equal in importance and that they are ALL serious mental health conditions regardless of how long a person has been struggling or the degree of symptoms that present. Munch and Mend also recognises that eating disorders can affect absolutely ANYONE, and I welcome each and every one of you here.
I am very aware that eating disorders are different for every individual and I do not for one second believe I know everything about these conditions. I do however know that there are significant behaviours, symptoms, and traits that go hand in hand with eating disorders, some of which are heightened by social expectations and judgements. All the opinions shared in my material are mine only based on personal experience, observations, interactions, and friendships with others during treatment.
You may already be aware that my eating disorder journey started with a form of binge eating disorder at the age of five, where I became very overweight and obsessed with food throughout my childhood years. However, this was only a short time compared to my battle against anorexia, purging anorexia, bulimia, and eating disorders driven by an unwavering need to look a certain way.
Because of my limited experience of binge eating disorder, I have created Munch and Mend with a primary focus around eating disorders that present with a marked obsession around size, weight, and shape. I would like to stress that this bears no relation to my feelings that these eating disorders are more valid or important than any other eating disorder (or disordered eating) diagnosis.
I also recognise that many eating disorders have marked similarities in causes, triggers, and the way to manage emotions and life itself, they just manifest differently in symptoms and physical presentation.
I would like to inform you that I have provided many references and links to different eating disorder and mental health services/contacts in the ‘Helpful Resources’ tab above. I do hope my content can help others in some way, as I want nothing more than for you all to join me in the fight against ALL eating disorders where we take back the control in a place of recovery.
Let’s stop living with this eating disorder ball and chain around our necks, and let’s put them in their grave where THEY belong!
